Software Analysis - File Shredder - Review

File Shredder – The name itself suggests it’s capability. It is a software that can delete a file permanently from the disk. But wait a second, you can do that work yourself, can’t you? Umm… Yes, but that doesn’t complete the work. When you delete a file traditionally, that is dragging the file to recycle bin and then emptying the bin, it does not delete the file but marks it for overwriting. To learn more, read my article on ‘What happens when you delete a file….’

Ok, I was quite happy with the graphical and somewhat attractive interface of the file shredder and it’s main screen is as follows:

The method is simple. You add a list of files and folders to be deleted and the File Shredder will delete them all when commanded. First four options in the left task pane allows you to edit this file and folder list. Fifth option, which I have not tried allows you to make remaining free space completely free. That might make a difference in your computer speed. Sixth option – Shredder Settings is very important. When clicked, shows you the following window:
The settings window shows you several tabs that allow you to tweak the software but the most important of them all is the Algorithms tab. It allows you to specify which algorithm you will use for shredding a file. The algorithm drop down menu shown here shows algorithms available in increasing manner of their efficiency. I tell you, All of them are efficient but more efficient you select, the more time will it take for shredding one file. For highly confidential files containing sensitive information, I recommend ‘Guttman Algorithm’ with 35 passes. It is the most secure one but will take a lot of time.

Over all, I like this software very much and I would like to recommend this for all of those who have confidential files on their disk.
